Palliative Care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing challenges associated with life threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification, impeccable assessment, management of pain and other problems.
Any person of any age with a confirmed medical diagnosis of a life-limiting condition qualifies for palliative care.
The Midlands Hospice care team offers home-based care and will design a care plan for each patient to ensure their individuality is respected, upheld and that the care is relevant and appropriate.
There is no cost involved for the patient. Our philosophy is that palliative care is a human right for all who need it.
Midlands Hospice divided their care into two service elements: Traditional and HIV/AIDS & TB programs.
All staff members are required to be sufficiently trained in order to perform to their best potential. Registered nurses are required to obtain the certificate in Palliative Nursing care which is recognized as a scarce skill within the South African Healthcare context.
In-service training is an ongoing requirement which is offered on a regular basis.
In addition to the above, courses are offered to the community on a regular basis, covering all topics related to Home-based Palliative Care.
Admission Criteria to the Midlands Hospice Programme : these criteria exclude those people residing in informal settlements.
A confirmed diagnosis of HIV and CD4 count of 350 and below
Hospice must receive a written referral from a recognized networking partner
A confirmed written diagnosis (from a medical doctor) of Cancer/Motor Neuron disease, with a reduced life expectancy.
A confirmed diagnosis of TB, in the initial phase of diagnosis.
